Connecting Kids with Autism to Digital Literacy and Social Media

Autism is a developmental disorder which usually appears in the first 3 years of life. Autism has affects on the brain’s normal development of social and communication skills. Students with Autism have a tough time learning and participating in digital literacy. They need help with communication and socialization on-line, time and task management, transition planning and preparation for after they are done with school. As a Special Education teacher and having students with Autism it is always a fear of mine as to how to prepare my students for life outside of school and their futures after they are done with school. Social networking and digital literacy are so important in today’s society. There are programs coming out for students with Autism and other disabilities to help with the social networking and digital literacy skills. One program that can be purchased is for older students and that is “Autism Expressed”. For younger students a program that can be used is called “digitability”. These programs have helped students with Autism understand skills that they need in order to be successful with technology and social networking.
